City of Port St. Lucie, FL

James E. Anderson Reverse Osmosis (RO) Pilot Study

Equipment used and capabilities:

Project Profile

The City of Port St. Lucie is located on the Atlantic Seaboard in St. Lucie County, Florida. It is a community of approximately 100,000 residents and the Utilities Department of the City provides and maintains a public wastewater and water distribution system for the needs of these residents.

Due to rapid development the City has embarked on significant upgrades to the water system including expansion of the existing 4.0 MGD Reverse Osmosis (RO) facility to 10 MGD as well as construction of the new James E. Anderson RO Water Treatment Plant (WTP). The James E. Anderson ROWTP will be sized for 4.0 MGD with a build-out capacity of 20 MGD. Both facilities utilize groundwater from the Floridan aquifer.

To support the design as well as optimize operation of the James E. Anderson ROWTP, Reiss Environmental conducted a full-array pilot study at the site. This pilot testing utilized Reiss Environmental’s trailer-mounted 2-1 array RO system. This system can treat fresh water, hard groundwater, saline groundwater, and seawater.

Pilot testing was performed to confirm the removal characteristics of the technology and confirm compliance with finished water quality goals. In addition, process optimization tasks were completed including optimization of acid and antiscalant doses, recovery rate, and feed spacer thicknesses. Results were utilized by the City to support construction and operation of the facility.
