Seawater

Treatment of seawater for most municipal drinking water and industrial uses is necessary based on typical water quality requirements. The primary water quality parameter of concern associated with seawater is salinity (or overall salt content) which typically ranges from 35,000 to 45,000 ppm as measured by total dissolved solids, or TDS.

Treated seawater can be utilized for numerous applications, including municipal drinking water and industrial water. Because of the background water quality, treatment usually consists of several independent process steps to meet application-specific water quality needs/standards.

Membrane process applications for seawater regularly include Microfiltration for solids removal (pretreatment for desalination) and RO for desalination.

  1. Microfiltration: Procurement of MF equipment and vendor support, alone, or packaged with complete pretreatment system.
  2. Reverse Osmosis: Trailer-Mounted Reverse Osmosis seawater desalination system treating 20 to 100 gallons per minute of raw water.



Ground Water

The use of groundwater for a variety of purposes (including municipal drinking water, irrigation and industrial applications) is common. Depending on the specified water quality needs or standards, groundwater treatment can range from disinfection to membrane treatment for excessive hardness or high salt content. Background parameters of concern can include salinity (brackish water at 2,000 to 10,000 ppm TDS), hardness (100 to 500 ppm TDS), dissolved metals and arsenic.

Most groundwater applications can be treated using a single membrane process, usually either Nanofiltration (for softening) or Reverse Osmosis (for removal of dissolved salts, metals or organics).

Essential Equipment Options

REI can provide the equipment to test these treatment solutions to your water quality issues. For your groundwater applications, REI can provide either of the following:

  1. RO: Trailer-Mounted, Skid-Mounted, or Bench-Scale brackish-water systems treating 20 to 100 gpm, 20 to 100 gpm or 1 gpm respectively.
  2. NF: Trailer-Mounted, Skid-Mounted, or Bench-Scale softening systems treating 20 to 100 gpm, 20 to 100 gpm or 1 gpm respectively.



Surface Water

Most surface waters require treatment prior to use in applications such as municipal drinking water, industrial or other potable use. Problematic constituents such as TOC (precursors to disinfection by-products), pesticides/herbicides, Cryptosporidium (and other microbiological contaminants), turbidity and a variety of other dissolved ions can hamper successful use of surface-water sources, particularly when forced to meet the stringent drinking-water standards included in the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Treatment of surface water can include one membrane process or two systems in series. Microfiltration and Ultrafiltration are utilized for the removal of solids that contribute to turbidity, and/or are present as microbiological contaminants. These systems can be applied strictly for their ability to efficiently remove solids, or as a pretreatment step for an application of Nanofiltration or Reverse Osmosis for removal of dissolved constituents.
